About Mangrove Cay
Our Story
Mangrove Cay is not a resort project or a development scheme. It is a community of roughly 400 people who have lived on this narrow strip of Andros Island for generations, fishing its flats, navigating its creeks, and maintaining a way of life largely untouched by modern tourism.
This website exists to introduce Mangrove Cay to people who will appreciate it, not change it. We connect thoughtful visitors with family-run lodges, experienced guides, and property opportunities that respect the island's character.
The Community
The people of Mangrove Cay are its greatest asset. Local bonefishing guides know these flats better than anyone in the world. Family-run establishments offer genuine Bahamian hospitality without pretense. The community maintains traditions while welcoming visitors who understand what makes this place special.
When you visit Mangrove Cay, you are not a tourist in the traditional sense. You are a guest in a living community. Your presence, when done right, supports local livelihoods and helps preserve the culture that makes the island worth visiting.
Our Commitment to Preservation
We are committed to:
- Supporting local businesses - We work exclusively with local guides, family-run accommodations, and Mangrove Cay residents
- Environmental stewardship - Promoting low-impact tourism, catch-and-release fishing, and respect for marine ecosystems
- Controlled growth - We carefully vet visitors and limit recommendations to ensure the island doesn't become overcrowded
- Cultural preservation - Encouraging visitors to engage with local culture authentically, not as a performance
Why We Screen Visitors
When we say "not all requests are accepted," it's not about exclusivity for its own sake. It's about fit. Some visitors want a resort experience: Mangrove Cay isn't that. Some want nightlife and amenities: you won't find them here. Some want to fish without guides or respect for conservation: we don't facilitate that.
We ask questions to ensure you know what you're getting into and to match you with the right accommodations, guides, and experiences. When visitors arrive with aligned expectations, they have transformative experiences. When they don't, both sides are disappointed.
